The Best Bait and Lures to Use While Deep Sea Fishing

March 22, 2019

Whether you are heading out on your first chartered fishing trip or you have been out a number of times before, you know just how important it is to have all of the right gear. You need a quality pole, a great charter, and of course, you need to know what bait and lures to use for the different types of fish you are hoping to land. Let’s take a look at some of the most popular types of fish and the baits that we’ve found tend to work well for them.

Kingfish

When it comes to kingfish, you will find that natural baits tend to work better than artificial lures. The bait that tends to have quite a bit of luck is menhaden shad, which are also called pogies. Other baits that you might want to consider include ribbonfish and even squid. While you may have some luck with lures on occasion, live bait is the preferred option, so keep that in mind when you are heading out.

Cobia

Another popular fish, the cobia is an aggressive fish that tends to strike both live bait, as well as lures. One of the reasons this fish is popular is because it is tasty, and also puts up a good challenge to be caught. The fish can end up weighing more than a hundred pounds with the largest of the species. The natural diet of this fish can make great bait. Some of these include crabs, eels, shrimp, squid and other small fish. You can also use pin fish, mullet, menhaden and other bait that is typically found in the area where you will be fishing.

As mentioned, lures can work well for these fish, too. One of the top baits to consider using is a plastic swimming eel. These can be used in just about any situation where you are fishing for cobia. Some other types of lures that could be effective include bucktail jigs that have a lot of color to them, as well as artificial versions of the natural bait mentioned above.

Shark

Fishing for sharks can be a fantastic experience, and there are many types of sharks that are very tasty. Because there are so many different varieties of shark, it means that the exact best bait can differ between the species. Therefore, you will want to research the particular shark species you are after and speak with the fishing charter to get more insight.

However, there are some basic things you can keep in mind when it comes to the bait. Popular options include bluefish and mackerel, and you will find that live bait will work far better than lures in most cases. In some instances, using a chum slick will help to draw sharks to the area.

Mahi-Mahi

The dorado, or mahi-mahi, is a fish with a very distinctive look. The nickname of the fish comes from the Hawaiian language and means “very strong”, and anyone who has caught these fish can attest that the mahi-mahi has an apt nickname. A very popular lure for catching these fish is the Williamson ballyhoo combo, but you’ll find that many types of ballyhoo rigs, artificial and natural, can work well. In addition, when it comes to live bait, crabs and squid, along with small fish, can work quite well.

Sailfish

Sailfish are easily one of the most popular deep sea fishing targets because they have such an iconic look. They are truly stunning fish, and both natural bait and lures can work well to catch them. The fish tend to eat squid, octopus, mackerel, tuna, ballyhoo, flying fish, mullet, and other small fishes. As for lures, Wide Range and Super Chugger lures from Mold Craft, the Pakula Lumo Sprocket, and Copa Fishing Lures’ Tado are good options to consider.

Tarpon

Some great bait to consider when you are fishing for tarpon include shrimp, pinfish, mullet, and crabs. They do seem to prefer going after live bait, but you will find that you can also have some great success with with lures. However, you will want to use the right kind of lures for the job. You will want to choose lures that are able to mimic fish. Ideally, you will have lures that mimic the natural prey of the fish, such as sardines, menhaden, mullet, and shad.

Wahoo

Aside from having a great name, this can be a fun fish to catch. With the right baits in their target zone, you can have great success. They respond to many different types of lures, but they often have color preferences. Choose red and black lures or purple and black lure patterns. Ballyhoo tend to work quite well.

These are some of the best baits and lures to catch the most popular types of fish when you are fishing on the ocean. Fin and Fly has a good understanding of not only what you need to catch the fish, but also where to go to find the fish that you are after. In fact, the charters will likely know what the fish have been going after lately, as well, and they can provide you with some advice when it comes to the bait you should be using.

Make sure you get in touch soon, so you can book your fishing charter and head out on your next – or your first – deep sea fishing trip.

Basics of the Florida Recreational Saltwater Fishing Regulations

Basics of the Florida Recreational Saltwater Fishing Regulations

March 20, 2019

You love fishing, but you probably don’t love wading through all of the rules and regulations in an attempt to understand what they are going to mean for you when you are out saltwater fishing. We understand entirely and with this article, we’ve endeavored to touch on some of the main points you need to know before you go out fishing. Keep in mind that these are not all of the regulations, of course.

Before you head out, you will want to familiarize yourself with the rules pertaining to the type of fishing you will be doing. If you will be heading out on a charter, such as Fin and Fly, they can provide you with the information you need to know to be sure you are in compliance with all of the current laws. Let’s look at some of those rules now.

Catching Billfish

Billfish include a range of fish. These include sailfish, blue Marlin, white Marlin, and roundscale spearfish. The minimum size limit for sailfish is 63”, it is 99” for blue Marlin, 66” for white Marlin, and 66” for roundscale spearfish. For these types of fish, there is a daily recreational bag limit of one fish per harvester. When measuring these fish, keep in mind that they are measured from the tip of the lower jaw to the fork of the tail. In addition, all of the fish caught need to be reported to NOAA within 24 hours.

Catching Mahi- Mahi

The minimum size for mahi-mahi caught in the Atlantic is 20”. Those who are fishing in the Gulf, however, will have no minimum size limits. There is a daily recreational bag limit of 10 per harvester per day. The vessel itself cannot exceed 60 per vessel per day. However, this vessel limit does not apply to for-hire vessels.

Catching the Gulf Kingfish

As you are going through the Florida Recreational Saltwater Fishing Regulations, you might find that the Kingfish is mysteriously absent. In fact, it is only mentioned briefly. The Gulf Kingfish is an example of a species that is unregulated. However, it is important to realize that even though they are considered “unregulated” that’s not entirely true. It simply means that harvesting 100 pounds or two fish, whichever is the greater amount, would constitute a commercial quantity and therefore needs a commercial license. This is very important to keep in mind.

Catching Wahoo

With the wahoo, you will find that there is a daily recreational bag limit of two per harvester. However, there is no size limit to the fish caught.

Catching Tarpon

There is a strict limit of one tarpon per harvester per year and a $50 harvest tag is required. There is also a vessel limit of one fish. There is also a rule that tarpon that are over 40” need to remain in the water during release. For these fish, spearing snatch hooking is not allowed. Additionally, in Boca Grande, bottom weighted jigs are prohibited.

Catching Cobia

The cobia will have a minimum size limit of 33” fork length. For those fish that are caught in the Atlantic, there is a daily recreational bag limit of just one per harvester. Additionally, there is not to be more than six per vessel. In the Gulf, there is also a limit of one per harvester. However, there are not to be more than two per vessel.

Catching Sharks

When it comes to catching sharks, there are species that can be caught. Retainable sharks with no minimum size limit include the Atlantic sharpnose, blacknose, bonnethead, finetooth, blacktip, and the smooth dogfish. Retainable sharks with a 54 inch fork length minimum include the bull shark, nurse shark, common thresher, spinner shark, blue shark, oceanic whitetip, short-fin Maiko, and the porbeagle.

With all sharks, there is a daily recreational bag limit of one per harvester or two per vessel – whichever is less. It is important that you are very familiar with the sharks, so you are not catching any species that is prohibited by law. The same is true of other fish.

As mentioned, these are just some of the many rules and regulations on a handful of the different types of fish that you might be after. However, they can give you a better understanding of what you can expect with certain types of fish. Again, you will want to speak with your charter get a better understanding of any other regulations that might apply to you.

Most Ideal Weather Conditions for Fishing

Most Ideal Weather Conditions for Fishing

March 13, 2019

If you go fishing, and you talk to others who go fishing, you will end up getting quite a bit of advice on a wide range of topics. They will tell you what you should be wearing, where you should and shouldn’t go, and probably even what you should have for lunch on the day you are fishing. Everyone has their opinion, and with many of these subjects, different opinions will not really matter. People choose what they like and if it works for them, they believe it will work well for everybody else, too. Of course, there are some areas of fishing that are matters of fact and not opinion. The right bait is one of these areas. So are the best weather conditions for fishing.

The reason understanding weather conditions is so important when it comes to fishing is because different types of fish species do respond differently to different conditions. When you have an understanding of these conditions, it can help to increase your chance of landing fish. For now, though, let’s look at some of the basic types of weather conditions that tend to be considered ideal.

The Wind

Many people do not even realize that wind has the potential to play a role in their fishing success. The wind will push water and surface food away from the shore, in many cases. Naturally, this means that the baitfish follow that surface food and the game fish follow the bait. If the day happens to be windy, shore fishing is going to be somewhat more difficult than being out in a boat. If you do happen to be onshore, you want to cast into the wind and make sure the lure moves along with the wind.

Fronts

When the weather patterns change and there are storms, it will affect the fish. These creatures are very attuned to the barometric conditions, of course. Many types of fish will feed more intensely during the hours right before a cold front. The feeding will often slow during and after a storm. After a cold front has come through, even in areas that are typically warm, the fishing will continue to be poor for about a day or so.

When you are dealing with a warm front on the other hand, the increase in the water temperature will often make the fish want to feed more. The feeding will often take place closer to the surface during this time because this is the area that tends to be warmer.

Clouds

You have probably heard that fishing on a cloudy day can be beneficial. It turns out that this is true because the clouds will reduce the amount of light penetration in the water. Fish will often cruise for food more than they will during days that are particularly bright. During those brighter days, many types of fish will stay close to structures and spend more time hiding.

Rain

Rain can also affect the fishing. When there is a light rain, even though it might not be pleasant to be out in it, it is one of the best times to fish. The rain helps to break up the view that the fish have through the surface of the water. Rain can often stir up surface food and bait fish, which brings out the larger game fish.

However, it is important to remember that light rain is good for fishing. It’s not the case when it comes to heavy and hard rain. This is especially true for fishing in rivers, streams, and lakes.

What About the Time of Day

Although it is certainly possible for you to fish during anytime of the day, you will find that even when deep sea fishing, dawn and dusk tend to be good options. You will just want to make sure you’re not going out during a slack tide. When you are fishing rivers and lakes, the time of day will certainly play a role. There are good reasons that anglers tend to be early risers. They know that it’s one of the best times of the day to catch a wide range of fish.

Will the weather conditions be a 100% foolproof method of determining exactly when you should go fishing? No, of course not. You can’t always plan your trips for when the weather is “ideal” for fishing, but that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t get out to the water and try your luck.

Mahi-Mahi Fish Taco Recipe from Fin & Fly

Mahi-Mahi Fish Taco Recipe from Fin & Fly

March 6, 2019

What are you going to do next weekend? Are you going to sit at home and accomplish a whole lot of nothing? Maybe you have some big plans, but you end up just sitting inside and gorging yourself on Netflix and pizza. This is no way to live, not when you have so many other great things that you could be doing instead! For example, why not take some time to book a fishing trip with Fin & Fly.

When you book a charter, you can head out for a beautiful day of fishing and actually doing something interesting. Why not catch some mahi-mahi? Not only is this a fun fish to catch, but you will also find that it also happens to be a very delicious fish. There are plenty of ways that you can prepare it, but one of the very best follows in our recipe, which you will find right here.

Making Delicious Mahi-Mahi Tacos

You love to spend time out on the water fishing and enjoying the day, of course. However, once you get your catch cleaned and you are at home, you need to put it to use. One of the very best options to consider with your mahi-mahi is to make tacos… seriously, it doesn’t get much better. Best of all, you’ll find that our recipe tends to be very simple to follow, even if you don’t consider yourself to be much of a chef.

Let’s get started with the ingredients you will need for the grilled mahi-mahi:

  • 2lbs of your fresh mahi-mahi filets that you then cut into 1.5” strips
  • 1 teaspoon of garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon of paprika
  • 1 teaspoon of salt
  • 1/2 a teaspoon of ground cumin
  • 1/2 a teaspoon of dry cilantro (can be eliminated if you don’t like cilantro)
  • 1/2 a teaspoon of cracked pepper

Next, you will need your ingredients for the crema:

  • 1/4 cup thinly sliced green onions
  • 1/4 cup chopped fresh cilantro (again, you can remove this if you do not like cilantro)
  • 3 tablespoons of mayonnaise
  • 3 tablespoons of sour cream
  • 1 teaspoon grated lime rind
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons of fresh lime juice
  • 1/4 teaspoon of salt
  • 1 minced garlic clove

Additional ingredients:

  • 3 cups of thinly sliced purple cabbage
  • 3 sliced avocados
  • 20 corn or flour tortillas

When you use your own mahi-mahi that you caught rather than bought, you will find that it will taste fresher and better. Of course, you also want to have the right hot sauce to go along with your delicious fish tacos. Fortunately, you will be able to find a fantastic option right in Madeira Beach, FL. “Crazy” Mother Pucker’s of the Month at the Florida Winery. They have some fantastic hot sauces that you might want to pick up for your tacos, and for anything else that needs a bit of a kick.

Now that you have a list of the ingredients you will need, and some ideas for a great hot sauce, it’s time to put it all together into some of the most delicious fish tacos you’ll ever have.

Grilling the Fish

First, you will want to get the grill prepared. Place it on medium-high heat. In a small bowl, you will combine all of the ingredients in the first list except for the mahi-mahi. Stir up the ingredients to mix them, then pat the mahi-mahi dry and rub this spice mixture onto the fish. Set it aside.

Making the Crema

Combine all the ingredients for the crema into a small bowl. Mix it up thoroughly until it has a nice and creamy texture and everything is mixed properly. It really is this easy to do.

Putting It Together

Now, we’re getting closer to actually making the tacos. First though you have to grill them. Make sure that the grill has been rubbed down with olive oil so the fish does not stick. You will now add the fish to the grill and cook it for between 2 to 3 minutes on each side. Once they are grilled, you will remove them.

During this time, you can also warm up the tortillas by grilling them for between 30 seconds and one minute per side. Remove them, and then add the fish to the tortillas with some of the sliced cabbage, along with the sliced avocado and some of the crema that you’ve made. Then, you can top it off with some of the hot sauce to give it a bit of spice.

See! Quick and simple, not to mention delicious.

How Much Does the Average Grouper Weigh?

March 1, 2019

You’ve probably seen groupers being caught and were simply amazed at just how large they are. You might even have quite a few questions about them, such as the title of this article. Let’s take a look at some of the most interesting fun facts and statistics about this popular fish.

There Are Many Types of Grouper

One of the first things you have to know about this species of fish is that there are actually more than 100 varieties around the world. You can find a range of types of grouper based in the Atlantic and the Gulf. Some of them include the scamp, black, snowy, gag, red, Warsaw, yellowfin, and speckled hind. The Goliath Grouper is found off the coast of Florida in the Atlantic, as well. However, for sport anglers out there, keep in mind that this particular type of grouper is protected. They were removed from the NOAA Species of Concern list in 2006, but they are still a “no take” species in the United States.

They Tend to Be Slow

While the fish have big mouths and the largest of the species can seem intimidating, these are slow, at least from the perspective of other fish. The shape of their body is not suited to swim quickly nor is it suited for long-distance swimming. This doesn’t seem to bother them though. They still thrive, and they are often capable of living in waters that are brackish. They do better than some other fish when it comes to having low levels of oxygen in the water.

Groupers Really Do Have Big Mouths

When people think about fish that they don’t want to meet while they are in the water, sharks are probably the top on that list, perhaps followed by barracuda. However, the grouper can be quite a scary fish, as well. Take the video that you can find online from 2014 that shows a Goliath grouper rising right out of the depths and swallowing a… wait for it… Blacktip shark. It circles the shark for a bit and then snatches it right out of the water before the angler can bring it on the boat.

What Type of Life Do They Live?

Many groupers, when they are young, will have colorful markings. However, as they get older, the color will begin to change. It will become duller, turning a greenish gray or brown. The grouper has the ability to live for up to 50 years, which is impressive for a fish. Another interesting fact is that groupers are not solitary fish. They tend to live in small groups. There will be one male with several females.

However, where it gets really interesting is that if the male of the group dies, one of the females has the ability to turn into a male and then take control of the group.

So, How Much Does the Average Grouper Weigh?

Since you now know that there are different types of grouper, this question becomes a bit more difficult to answer. It will depend on the type of grouper that’s being weighed, of course, and that means that the weight of an “average” grouper will vary greatly among the many varieties. Let’s look at the average weight of the Goliath Grouper, as an example. This fish will generally reach a weight of around 400 pounds. However, there have been some much larger fish caught. One in Florida that was caught with a hook and line weighed 680 pounds. They can get larger, though. In fact, they can be in excess of nine feet long and can weigh up to 1000 pounds.

Another large type of grouper is the Warsaw Grouper. This fish can grow up to 7.5 feet long and it can weigh more than 440 pounds. However, other types of grouper are much smaller. The Nassau Grouper will typically be around 35 inches long.

Are They Good to Eat?

You will find that many of the smaller types of grouper – namely the ones that you will be fishing for – can be quite delicious. As with any type of fish, it will be important to make sure it is prepared properly if you want the best results.

If you have an interest in trying to catch this type of fish, you will want to get in touch with the fishing charter to see how they can help. Try to work with a charter that knows and understands what it takes to successfully catch groupers.

5 Reasons Why Fin & Fly is the Space Coast’s Best Fishing Charter/Guide

February 21, 2019

Have you thought about going fishing when you come down and explore the Space Coast of Florida? Perhaps you are looking for some things you can do that will help to fill out your vacation, or maybe you are planning your entire trip around fishing. If you want to fish the waters in this area, you will find that your best option will be to work with a fishing charter service. Therefore, you will want to pick Space Coast’s best Fishing Charter/Guide.

Fishing charters will take people out into rivers, lakes, and out onto the ocean to go fishing. Those who operate the charters tend to know the area and they have boats, so the visiting anglers will not have to rent a boat of their own and try to navigate the area. However, it is important to remember that not all of these fishing charters are created equal. Some are better than others.

Fin & Fly, located in Cape Canaveral, as well as Cocoa Beach, aims to provide their customers with only the very best. They have developed a stellar reputation over the years and they truly are the best fishing charter you will find. Let’s look at five of the main reasons they stand out among the competition.

A Vast Amount of Knowledge

The captains who are a part of this fishing charter have a wealth of experience when it comes to captaining their vessels, as well as fishing. This means they know and understand the areas where they will be taking you. They also know the habits of the fish that make their home there. They can provide you with advice that can help whether you are a brand-new angler or you have been fishing since you could walk. No matter what type of fish you are after, you can be sure you are working with those who are true experts in the field when you choose Fin & Fly. You will know exactly what you need to do to catch the types of fish you are after and you can be sure you’re in the right area.

Approachable and Friendly Captains

One of the problems that many fishing charters tend to have is that the personnel on the boats are not easy to approach. The captains and others on the boat might be standoffish, for example. In other cases, they might not spend any time talking to the anglers. They simply bring them out into the water and let them have at it. This can make the visitors on the boat feel uncomfortable. Fortunately, you don’t have to worry about with that with Fin & Fly. You will find that the captains tend to be very friendly and easy to approach and speak to when you have questions or concerns.

Plenty of Options

Another one of the great reasons to consider this fishing charter is the sheer number of options available to you. For example, you could take a deep sea charter, a river fishing charter, or you could take an inshore fishing charter. Fish for sharks, red snapper, sailfish, and more. Emma Watson

Have you ever thought that you might like to have a little magic working for you when you’re catching fish – or at least trying to catch fish? Emma Watson, the actress who portrayed Hermione Granger in the Harry Potter films brings along magic and grace whenever she goes out to fish. She’s known for having a number of hobbies outside of her work in Hollywood, and one of those hobbies happens to be fishing. She happens to love fly fishing in particular and is quite good at tying her own flies without using any magic other than her knowledge.

However, he also has a hobby that is a little bit less dangerous. As you’ve probably guessed from the title of the article, he loves fishing. While he is rumored to like many types of fishing, like Watson, he also has a penchant for fly fishing.

Jimmy Buffett

He is also a big fan of saltwater fishing. While he does spend a lot of time in tropical waters, you will find that he also fishes further to the north. In fact, in 2013, Buffett was fortunate enough to catch a large tuna off the coast of Nantucket. The fish was 74 inches long and it weighed a whopping 350 pounds.
