Anglers joining our Cocoa Beach fishing charters this month are putting together a mixed bag on the deep sea trips, while nearshore and beach anglers are staying busy with a completely different lineup of species. Here’s a rundown of what’s been biting. Cocoa Beach Fishing Report July 2026 – Deep Sea Highlights Offshore, kingfish have been one of the most consistent producers this month, showing up steadily on both half-day and full-day charters. Alongside them, our anglers are catching a solid mix of reef and bottom species, including: Lane snapper Triggerfish Amberjack Grouper (when in season) Cobia, on occasion Mahi-mahi have also been coming aboard on some of our full-day offshore runs, though the bite has been more sporadic than a typical peak-summer push. Anglers chasing mahi specifically should book a full-day trip to give the boat time to reach the weed lines and current edges where they’re holding. For a full breakdown of when mahi and sailfish run heaviest off Cocoa Beach, see our Best Time to Fish Offshore Cocoa Beach guide. A note on red snapper: anglers are still encountering red snapper on the reefs and wrecks offshore, but recreational harvest remains closed following the sudden South Atlantic red snapper season closure in May. Any red snapper caught this month are being carefully released, as required while the federal closure remains in effect. Anglers targeting reef species should... - Published: 2026-07-19 - Modified: 2026-08-19 - URL: https://finandflycharters.com/deep-sea-fishing-cost-florida/ If you’re planning a deep sea fishing trip on Florida’s coast, one of the first questions on your mind is probably simple: what’s the deep sea fishing cost going to be? The honest answer is that it depends on a handful of factors — trip length, boat type, group size, and what’s included in your package. This guide breaks down exactly what drives deep sea fishing cost so you can budget with confidence before you book with Fin & Fly Charters. What Affects Deep Sea Fishing Cost in Florida Trip length is the single biggest factor in deep sea fishing cost. A half-day trip of around five hours will always cost less than a full-day or extended offshore trip, since a longer charter uses more fuel, more crew time, and covers more distance to reach productive fishing grounds. Trip type also plays a role. Charters that run farther offshore to reach bluewater species use more fuel and time on the water than a shorter nearshore trip, which can affect the total cost. Group size changes the math on private charters specifically. Because the total charter fee is usually fixed regardless of how many people you bring, up to the boat’s capacity, a larger group can significantly lower the cost per angler. Unlike many charters, Fin & Fly keeps pricing flat year-round, so you won't pay a peak-season premium. The rate you see when you book is the rate you pay, whether it's the middle of summer or the dead of... - Published: 2026-05-22 - Modified: 2026-08-19 - URL: https://finandflycharters.com/south-atlantic-red-snapper-season-closed/ South Atlantic Red Snapper Season Closed the Night Before Opening Day The South Atlantic red snapper season closed unexpectedly on May 21, 2026 to recreational anglers across Florida and the South Atlantic Thursday after NOAA Fisheries announced that the 2026 recreational red snapper season in federal waters has been halted effective immediately. The closure came less than 24 hours before Florida’s planned May 22, 2026 opening day, leaving thousands of anglers, charter captains, and coastal businesses scrambling after months of preparation. According to NOAA Fisheries, a federal court ruling issued by the United States District Court for the District of Columbia granted a preliminary injunction that suspends the exempted fishing permits (EFPs) used to authorize the 2026 state-managed recreational red snapper seasons in the South Atlantic. As a result, recreational South Atlantic red snapper season closed. Why the South Atlantic Red Snapper Season Closed Suddenly The closure stems from a lawsuit challenging the South Atlantic exempted fishing permit program that allowed Florida, Georgia, South Carolina, and North Carolina to operate their own recreational red snapper seasons in federal waters. NOAA Fisheries stated: “All recreational fishing under these South Atlantic EFPs is not authorized, including tomorrow’s start date of May 22, 2026, for Florida’s recreational red snapper season. ” This means anglers targeting red snapper in federal waters off Florida’s Atlantic Coast can no longer legally harvest the species until further notice. The ruling only impacts the recreational season under the EFP program. NOAA confirmed that the future South Atlantic commercial... - Published: 2026-03-13 - Modified: 2026-03-13 - URL: https://finandflycharters.com/cocoa-beach-fishing-report-march-2026/ Cocoa Beach Fishing Report March 2026 The Cocoa Beach fishing report March 2026 is already showing excellent action offshore and nearshore of Port Canaveral. Anglers joining our Cocoa Beach fishing charters are seeing a wide variety of species including mahi-mahi offshore, sharks nearshore, and reef fish like snapper and triggerfish on local reefs. Cocoa Beach Fishing Report Video – Redfish Catch We recently filmed our March Cocoa Beach fishing report video, where we hooked into a nice redfish while fishing the local waters. Redfish caught near Cocoa Beach during a March fishing charter Redfish have been showing up around the lagoons and nearshore areas, giving anglers a great opportunity for light tackle action this time of year. Cocoa Beach Fishing Report March 2026 – Shark Fishing Heating Up Nearshore Shark fishing has been especially good lately with several species showing up close to shore. Our Florida shark fishing charters have been producing steady action on recent trips. Several species of sharks have been active close to the beaches. Spring is a great time for shark fishing along Florida’s east coast as water temperatures begin to warm and baitfish move closer to shore. Offshore Mahi-Mahi Bite on Full-Day Trips For anglers heading farther offshore on full-day fishing charters, the mahi-mahi bite has been very good. These colorful offshore fish are being caught around floating debris, weed lines, and bait pods as they begin moving into the area. Mahi-mahi fishing typically improves throughout the spring, and March is often when the first... - Published: 2026-03-11 - Modified: 2026-08-19 - URL: https://finandflycharters.com/great-white-shark-cocoa-beach/ Great White Shark Spotted Offshore Cocoa Beach (3 Sightings in 3 Days) Great white shark swimming offshore of Cocoa Beach near Port Canaveral. An incredible series of great white shark sightings offshore of Cocoa Beach and Cape Canaveral has anglers across Florida talking this week. During a deep sea fishing charter offshore of Port Canaveral, Captain John Lau aboard the Game Changer encountered a massive great white shark cruising near the boat. Many anglers choose Cape Canaveral fishing charters to reach the offshore waters quickly. With quick access to deep water from nearby Port Canaveral, fishing charters can reach prime offshore fishing grounds in less time than many other ports in the state. Whether you're visiting the Space Coast or planning a serious offshore fishing trip, deep sea fishing near Cocoa Beach provides opportunities to target a wide variety of powerful pelagic species. Why Cape Canaveral Is Great for Deep Sea Fishing One of the biggest advantages of fishing from Cape Canaveral is the short distance to deep water. Unlike many areas where boats must travel long distances offshore, the continental shelf drops quickly along Florida’s east coast. This means anglers can begin fishing productive waters sooner, giving more time to target species such as: Mahi-mahi Sailfish Wahoo Blackfin tuna King mackerel The nearby Gulf Stream current also pushes nutrient-rich water close to shore, creating excellent offshore fishing conditions throughout the year. How Far Offshore Do Deep Sea Fishing Trips Go? Most deep sea fishing charters departing from Port Canaveral travel 15 to 40 miles offshore, depending on the season and target species. Typical offshore zones include: Nearshore Reefs (10–20 miles)Great for kingfish, cobia, and sharks. Offshore Ledges (20–30 miles)Productive areas for grouper and amberjack. This change comes after Florida formally requested management of the Atlantic recreational red snapper fishery, paving the way for a longer and more flexible season starting in 2026. 2026 Atlantic Red Snapper Season Dates According to the FWC’s proposal, the 2026 season could extend from just two days in 2025 to an incredible 39 days in 2026 — a massive expansion for local anglers and charter guests. Proposed Atlantic Red Snapper Season Dates: Summer Season: May 22 – June 20 (Memorial Day Weekend through early summer) Fall Mini-Seasons: October 2–4, 9–11, and 16–18 That’s nearly six full weeks of red snapper fishing for Cocoa Beach, Port Canaveral, and other Florida Atlantic coast communities. What This Means for Cocoa Beach Fishing The new management plan is a huge win for local anglers and the tourism economy alike. It was an interesting storm to say the least with power outages, flooding, and down trees. We really do appreciate our customers that have fished with us already for reaching out to see if we were ok during the whole storm. Crazy how one minute the storm is going to track more to the west and then switch and head east. Ft Myers is in total destruction from when Ian made landfall and our heart goes out to the charter captains in that area. The storm then proceeded north east to our coast of Cocoa Beach and Cape Canaveral and sure enough, the eye of the storm went directly over us. Pretty crazy how calm and nice the weather is in the eye of the storm but anyway we're back to fishing. I always tell our customers that fishing can be an absolute blast inshore right after a hurricane because the water rises so high and the fish move into the areas they can’t always get into. Redfish, Trout, Tarpon, and Black Drum will be the targeted species in the river right now and the redfish bite has already been a blast but it is fishing and every day is a new day. Our nearshore shark fishing trips this month will start seeing the bull reds move in along the coast of Cocoa Beach and Cape Canaveral. Other then that the species you could see this month are kingfish, mahi mahi, red snapper, grouper, sailfish, barracuda, bonita, amber jack, almaco jack, trigger fish, cobia, sea bass, wahoo, goliath grouper and sharks. Depending on what trip you book with us you can always give us a call to see what we’ve been catching on our half and full day deepsea trips. Grouper season! It is now back opened as of May 1st until December 31st along the coasts of Cocoa Beach and Cape Canaveral also known as Port Canaveral. Make sure to book your full day deep sea fishing charter with us to try and catch some Grouper, the reason why we recommend a full day that’s if your wanting to try and target grouper is because on a half day deep sea charter there is not enough time because we have to go further out for them. Types of grouper we catch off the coast of Cocoa Beach and Cape Canaveral are Gag Grouper, Black Grouper, Red Grouper, and Goliath Grouper. Unfortunately Goliath Grouper also known as Jew Fish are federally protected so we can’t keep them but they do put up one heck of a fight, some coming in around 400 pounds. The most common grouper we catch here along the Space Coast is the Gag Grouper. Other species could include this month on the full day deep sea charter are Amberjack, Almaco, Mahi Mahi aka Dolphin or Dorado, King Fish, Trigger Fish, Red Snapper, Sharks, Vermillion Snapper, Barracuda, Bonita, Cobia, Sailfish, and Sea Bass. If you have never been on a charter, you are probably excited about all that it will entail. However, you might also be wondering just what you should be wearing on your trip. You want to be sure that you have the right clothing, so you aren’t too hot or too cold, for example. The following are some tips that will help to ensure that you have just what you need for your Port Canaveral guided fishing charter. You Want to Have Layers When you are heading out in the morning for your fishing charter, it might be on the cool side. On the other hand, it might already be muggy on the way to the docks. The important takeaway is that you can never tell exactly what the weather and the temperature will be, and that is why you need to dress in layers. You want to have clothing that you will be able to put on and take off through the day, as needed. This will make it easier for you to regulate your body temperature and ensure your comfort. It might rain in the middle of the day, so you might also want to have some raingear that you can slip on if needed. There are rain ponchos that fold down small enough that they could be put into a bag or even the pocket of some cargo pants or shorts, for example. You know that a great charter can mean a world of difference with the success of your trip and the number of fish or size of fish that you catch. Of course, with so many companies vying for your attention, it can be difficult to know exactly what it is you should be looking for when you are making your decision. The following can help you to narrow your decision, though. This should make it easier to find the best guided charter in Port Canaveral. The Cheapest Doesn't Mean the Best- Neither Does Most Expensive One of the big mistakes that many people make when they are trying to choose a charter for fishing in Port Canaveral, and elsewhere, is focusing too much on the price. Yes, the amount that you will have to pay for the charter is important, but it is not the aspect of the charter that should be what makes or breaks your decision. If you find a charter that is one of the cheapest, you have to wonder just why it is so cheap. What is it that allows them to charge so little? Do they offer less on the charter? Are the trips shorter? Do they have a bad reputation for customer service, and they are using rock bottom prices as a means to still attract clients? On the other hand, you also have to look at... - Published: 2019-06-26 - Modified: 2019-06-26 - URL: https://finandflycharters.com/day-in-cape-canaveral-offshore-fishing-charter/ You are going to be spending some time enjoying everything that Cape Canaveral has to offer. Perhaps you are coming to the area for a vacation, and you want to be sure that you have plenty of things that will help to keep you happy and busy. While you have quite a few options, one of the best will be to head out on an offshore fishing charter. Let’s look at why you will want to spend at least one of your days out and fishing. Relax and Have a Good Time One of the best reasons to choose an offshore fishing charter is because they can be an ideal way for you to get away from the crowds in the city and to really relax. You can get out on the water, breathe in the sea air, and enjoy the weather, along with the peace and the solitude that can come from being out on the water. When you are out in the ocean, it can provide a sense of calm, even when you are reeling in a big one. You have heard that there is a lot of good fishing out there, and you want to try your hand at it. Perhaps you have been talking with your family, friends, and some coworkers about getting a guided fishing charter, but you aren’t entirely sure what to expect or what you need to do. The following are some simple tips that should help to make sure you and your friends are properly prepared. Take the Time to Chose the Right Charter One of the first things that you need to do is to find the right charter. In fact, this is the most important thing that you need to do. If you do not have a good charter, it does not bode well for the rest of the trip. Keep in mind that price is not as important as what the charter is able to offer and what they include. Some of the fishing charters will provide only the bare bones, taking you to a fishing spot that you want to go. Others will be able to provide gear, bait, cleaning of the fish, and more. Determine what you need and what they can deliver, then make your choice. Make Sure You Dress Appropriately It is important that you always dress properly, of course. You need a quality pole, a great charter, and of course, you need to know what bait and lures to use for the different types of fish you are hoping to land. Let’s take a look at some of the most popular types of fish and the baits that we’ve found tend to work well for them. Kingfish When it comes to kingfish, you will find that natural baits tend to work better than artificial lures. The bait that tends to have quite a bit of luck is menhaden shad, which are also called pogies. Other baits that you might want to consider include ribbonfish and even squid. While you may have some luck with lures on occasion, live bait is the preferred option, so keep that in mind when you are heading out. Cobia Another popular fish, the cobia is an aggressive fish that tends to strike both live bait, as well as lures. One of the reasons this fish is popular is because it is tasty, and also puts up a good challenge to be caught. The fish can end up weighing more than a hundred pounds with the largest of the species. The natural diet of this fish can make great bait. They will tell you what you should be wearing, where you should and shouldn’t go, and probably even what you should have for lunch on the day you are fishing. Everyone has their opinion, and with many of these subjects, different opinions will not really matter. People choose what they like and if it works for them, they believe it will work well for everybody else, too. Of course, there are some areas of fishing that are matters of fact and not opinion. The right bait is one of these areas. So are the best weather conditions for fishing. The reason understanding weather conditions is so important when it comes to fishing is because different types of fish species do respond differently to different conditions. When you have an understanding of these conditions, it can help to increase your chance of landing fish. For now, though, let’s look at some of the basic types of weather conditions that tend to be considered ideal. The Wind Many people do not even realize that wind has the potential to play a role in their fishing success. The wind will push water and surface food away from the shore, in many cases. Naturally, this means that the baitfish follow that surface food and the game fish follow the bait. You can find a range of types of grouper based in the Atlantic and the Gulf. Some of them include the scamp, black, snowy, gag, red, Warsaw, yellowfin, and speckled hind. The Goliath Grouper is found off the coast of Florida in the Atlantic, as well. However, for sport anglers out there, keep in mind that this particular type of grouper is protected. They were removed from the NOAA Species of Concern list in 2006, but they are still a “no take” species in the United States. They Tend to Be Slow While the fish have big mouths and the largest of the species can seem intimidating, these are slow, at least from the perspective of other fish. The shape of their body is not suited to swim quickly nor is it suited for long-distance swimming. This doesn’t seem to bother them though.
